Time to update this site with a new picture. It is from our holiday in Spain. Maybe the makers of The Elder Scrolls - Oblivion where also inspired by the city of Girona? At least the atmosphere there reminded me of the game.

Time to save the planet... Just kidding *wish I could*, but I just changed my server from a power hungry 140W eating beast, to a small and nice gentle 15W mini server. A factor ten cut, impressive! My new server is also built from green materials (according to the asus eee box site) and a little bit faster.. Now I hope it will serve me just as well as well as my old one and for the same amount of years..
Back from beautiful country Vietnam and of course updated the photo section of this site.
Today I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron on a desktop computer. I am pretty distro/desktop agnostic (see my ten year anniversary post), but since Debian Etch is a bit old for a desktop and Hardy Heron has Long Term Support (I do not want to update/fix a computer every half year!!) Ubuntu was my choice.
There are unlimited gnome improvements which I don't care about, but some things stand out for me in this release.
So thanks again for all free software developers!
There is only one week between this picture and the one below.... The trick is of course the invention of the aeroplane, which enabled me to make a trip to Egypt, a wonderful country. See more soon in my photo section of this site.

During some longer than normal train travelling I had time to rework some site bits. Permalink code is rewritten, pages are now integrated into my journal and the archive navigation is date based. Tag support is added to site and feeds
Also I added photos from an autumn week in Morocco. This trip is really recommended in october.
Back from my holiday in Belgium and Luxembourg. I had a good time, turned 30; now I am trying to get back to business.

from a long week Andalusia. It took me a while to get used to the weather (dropping from 27 C to -2
C!) and updating this page. The atmosphere (and the trip) were great. Nature was beautiful (where
can I donate for bringing mountains to Holland ;-) and the (medieval) buildings special (especially the
mix between christian and moorish architecture). The romans also had discovered the good weather
and fertile ground early and left lots of trails (some villages still have a roman ground-map and
small white 3-level 'concrete flats').
Just before I left, I bought a new Canon 350D. One of the most mainstream (SLR) camera's. I had some positive experience with the analog version and reviews of the digital thing were ok. I am very happy with it. It works fine with gphoto2. (Sorry for the analog camera lovers).
These two items combined gives some new photo albums on this site. Enjoy.
From now on I live in Leiden. I enjoyed my 11 years in Delft, but it was time for a different place.
Leiden was inhabited (at least) from 300 BC (actually the Romans lived in Katwijk, but this sounds better ;-)). In 900 AC, where the Oude rijn, the Nieuwe Rijn and the Mare come together, a tower was built, which began urbanization and in 1266 the city received city rights.
Leiden also housed the first dutch university and was home of the Nobel price winner Kamerlingh Onnes.
Back from two weeks Italy, added photo's and yes, misused the lovely wide-angle lens too much. Sorry, it is too much fun and I am still learning ;-).
Turned 29 at what the hack. I really enjoyed this event, hopefully I have some code to release soon. You can see at these pictures what the atmosphere was like.
In a few days, I will be on holiday in Tignes. So no e-mail will be

In the past weeks I have been working on a cleanup of the NJBG site. Some people volunteered to maintain the site. Since we are talking about a youth association, this is probably a good thing.
One of the lasts hacks I did was a mailing list. Actually multiple mailing lists with a web frontend. Although it is not really solid yet, it basically works. With PHP, programming is actually too easy these days. I needed only one procmail line (to redirect the incoming mail to PHP) and about twenty lines of PHP code. That is it. After working with python for some projects, it struck me again how good the PHP documentation is. Associative arrays (called dictionaries) in python still are a small mystery for me. Where PHP has a lot of nice array_ functions, python provides me with .keys(), .items() etc. methods, which make live hard. I really prefer handling with the keys and values in the same abstraction depth. Perhaps this is the reason mailman is such a monstrous beast...
Added an interview (wrote it already, so why waste it ;-)) on this page about the NJBG.
I am connected to the internet again (after a month leave), so expect more later.
Some small updates on my website, most of them to do with information not being up to date and not being able to keep up to date (read: I removed some pages). I will move this month, so don't expect updates in the near-future.

From 1988 to 2002 I was a member of the NJBG, a youth association for history and archeology. I helped during my youth at a lot of excavations and leaded some summer camps, to teach my skills to others. At this moment I still maintain the NJBG website. I have some contacts in the the archeological world because of my membership of the board of this association and hopefully I will volunteer at excavations in the future.If you want to know something about the NJBG in this period I will gladfully answer them.

Precies 406 jaar nadat koning Henry VII zijn vijfde vrouw trouwde en 226 jaar nadat J.S. Bach is overleden. Mijn geboorte vondt plaats in gemeente De Ronde Venen, wereldberoemd dankzij het enige turfsteekmuseum ter wereld. (Een turfsteekmuseum is een oude schuur, waar op zolder een stuk turf en een schep staan).
Teveel om allemaal te noemen. Nadat ik al een hele NJBG-carriere achter de rug had in de meest revolutionaire afdeling van de NJBG, het immer tegenstemmende Rotterdam, nam ik in het hoofdbestuur plaats als achtereenvolgens secretaris, pr-coordinator en publicatiemedewerker. Wapenfeiten zijn het aanleggen van een geintegreerd computernetwerk op het bureau, het werven van zo"n 250 leden, het opzetten van de eerste full-color zomerkampenbrochure en, achteraf tot mijn grote spijt, het introduceren van het taalkundig gedrocht "medioren".
Daarnaast heb ik vele activiteiten (mede-)georganiseerd, o.a. het congres over muziek. Ik heb drie keer de leiding gehad over kamp Treignes (zolang "mijn kleren niet al te moe waren" dan). Samen met Eelco, Fleur, Masja en anderen heb ik vijf graafinstructiekampen voor medioren geleid. Naast dat we de nieuwe creme de la creme van de nederlandse archeologie hun eerste archeologische stapjes te hebben laten zetten (schaven met je donder!), hebben we vermoedelijk meer dan duizend visjes naar de zee (en de haai) laten zwemmen.
Op dit moment ben ik nog webmaster van njbg.nl en lid van de statutencommissie. Verder had ik het vermoeden zitting te hebben in de adviesraad, maar ik kwam helaas niet door de maatpak-beoordelingscommissie.
Uiteindelijk heb ik net lang genoeg over mijn studie gedaan om Master of Science te worden (in de natuurkunde). Dit heeft niks met archeologie te maken, maar met je statische vondstdichtheidsproblemen kan je gerust bij mij aankloppen. Daarnaast heb ik ook nog een jaartje dia"s gekeken bij de opleiding kunstgeschiedenis in Leiden (een echte aanrader).
Transform coding of audio impulse responses. Dit lijkt mij zo duidelijk dat het geen verdere uitleg behoeft. Het heeft te maken met mijn grootste hobby: muziek.
Ik ben altijd al wetenschappelijk nieuwsgierig en nadenken over het verleden lijkt me dan een van de meest logische dingen om te doen. Ik heb uiteindelijk toch gekozen voor nadenken over het heden (natuurkunde), maar geschiedenis en archeologie blijven een hobby van mij.
Op mijn 11e leidde ik mijn eigen opgraving in onze tuin, naar de funderingen van een oude boerderij die daar gestaan heeft. Verder was ik een frequent bezoeker van de nederlandse musea. Toen ik in het Rijksmuseum voor Oudheden een folder vond heb ik me dan ook vrij snel opgeven. Op mijn 12e ben ik voor het eerst meegegaan op zomerkamp; een traditie die ik een jaar of 10 in stand heb gehouden. Op dit moment heb ik zoveel (ex-)NJBG"ers als vrienden, dat ik de NJBG waarschijnlijk nooit meer uit mijn verleden kan wissen. Ik zit er dus aan vast ;-).
Vanaf 1588 was Nederland een van de eerste, moderne republieken. Na de vrede van Munster beleefde Nederland haar gouden eeuw. De meeste van mijn favoriete nederlandse hoogtepunten uit de muziek, kunst, literatuur, wetenschap en filosofie komen ook uit deze tijd. In 1815 deed Nederland een stap terug en werd weer monarchie, het einde van mijn favoriete tijdperk dus.
G.W. Bush. Dat deze man de intelligentie ("The illiteracy level of our children are appalling.") van een eencellige heeft, zou op zich niet zo"n probleem zijn, als hij maar rustig pretzels bleef eten op zijn bank. Helaas is op dit moment de rol van de Verenigde Staten in de wereld enorm groot, waardoor misstanden tegen de mensheid (Irak, Israel, veel landen in Afrika, etc. etc.) enorm zijn toegenomen.
Mijn favoriete historische helden zijn Madame Curie en Aletta Jacobs. Aletta Jacobs is de eerste nederlandse vrouw die werd toegelaten aan een universiteit (in 1871). Later werd ze een bekend als feministe en maakt zich onder andere hard voor vrouwenkiesrecht. Madame Curie was een pionier op het gebied van stralingsleer, en heeft samen met haar man, H. Becquerel, in 1903 de Nobelprijs gewonnen. Helaas overleed ze aan leukemie (als gevolg van de vele straling waaraan zij was blootgesteld), een jaar voor haar dochter ook een Nobelprijs in ontvangst mocht nemen.
Dangerous liaisons is een verfilming van een door Choderlos de Laclos in 1782 uitegegeven boek. Er zijn diverse verfilmingen van, mijn favoriete film is de verfilming uit 1988, met o.a. Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Keanu Reeves en Uma Thurman. Alhoewel de kostuums en decors prachtig zijn is dit toch meer een liefdesverhaal dan het brengen van een historisch bekend verhaal. Het gaat over listen en lusten in de liefde en kent van begin tot einde een enorme spanning en uitmuntend acteerwerk (alleen Keanu Reeves is waardeloos...).
Het verhaal is nog eens kreupel verfilmd in 1999, onder de naam Cruel Intentions. Best vermakelijke om een keer te zien, maar het acteerwerk en de atmosfeer komen nergens maar enigszins in de buurt van de 1988-versie.
Pas heb ik de biografie van Madeleine Albright, "Mevrouw de minister" gelezen. Een indrukwekkend boek, dat de tijd beschrijft dat Albright minister was, geschiedkundig gezien roerige jaren. Door haar betrokkenheid krijg je een goed "insiders"-blik in de wereldgeschiedenis. Uit verhalend oogpunt is het ook een interessant boek, Albright was de eerste vrouwelijke minister in de VS en heeft echt hard moet vechten tegen de vervelende aspecten van een die-hard mannencultuur.
Mijn favoriete historische fictieboeken zijn de Odyssee en Ulysses. De Odyssee van Homerus beschrijft de terugreis van Odysseus, inclusief de vele problemen die hij onderweg tegen komt. Het origineel lezen is leuk om eens te doen, maar minstens net zo leuk zijn de versies in boek-, film en theatervorm die spelen met de thema"s uit de griekse mythologie.
Ulysses van James Joyce is leuk om aan te beginnen als je de Odyssee goed kent: het bevat, ook al is het een totaal ander verhaal, d.m.v. tijd, personages en kleuren vele verwijzingen naar de Odyssee. Maar wees gewaarschuwd, het is geen gemakkelijk boek.

In 2000 and 2001 I studied art history in Leiden.
Hopefully I will some day finish this study. Following courses was much nicer
than my first study (applied physics).I produced a lot of publications for
this study, but unfortunately I lost these... However, visiting expositions and
musea is still a hobby. Questions about these period can still be asked to me.
I am back from my holiday trip to Tanzania; pictures will later be present at this location. In the peaceful presence of mother Anna, I also became 28 winters (or is it summers?, damn southern hemisphere) young.
First of all, I updated the site. The layout is fixed once again
(don't ask for the reasons, they can fill the whole page). More important
is that the backend is rewritten. Because I host a lot of pages for various
organizations, groups and people
I needed a better, more dynamic framework. Also I will start to use rss aggregrators, so
the sonicbliss people can share a bit more.
Things are not all done yet. When I have time again I will change the various photo galleries I run and consolidate them. Then I can make some photo's public (nothing embarrassing of course ;-). Also the user framework will change, allowing one single login system ('to rule them all').
On a personal level: I will leave for a holiday real soon, so hopefully everything will continue to run smooth.
Off to Paris for a few days, so be gentle with the server please.. (is this something like telling the burglar you'll be away for a week and you leave the house empty?).
